MELAMINE

While I was taking taxi back home one night, I heard on the radio that once again another famous brand has been tested with Melamine. (Cadbury. how sad) Yes, I understand that melamine has caused a lot of distress and harm to people around the world and especially in China, leading to more than 53,000 children ill and four dead. I mean even I sometimes fear and doubt the quality of Chinese products, however, I do think that the world should cut China some slack and give them another chance.

Okay. When I talk about products from Japan, what words will pop up in your mind? High quality? High tech? little would you know that back in World war 2 their products has a reputation of being very cheap but of very bad quality. Look how far they’ve come. It takes time for a developing country to transform into a developed country, especially a country that has been through so much turmoil. Some may wonder, how could one possibly be so immoral and do something like that knowing that it could cause potential harm to the public? This is actually a legacy of the Cultural Revolution. Conditions during that time was beyond our imagination, it was unbearable. People were literally starving to death, in such a hopeless situation they would use any mean possible to earn money and this legacy still remains in the minds of many Chinese.

Maybe it’s just me, but I do think the media has been magnifying the situation and making it sound more serious that it really is. I mean seriously, would you be eating MORE THAN 140 PIECES OF Lotte Cream Cheese Cake or 150 PIECES OF WHITE RABBIT CANDY in ONE DAY? Seriously? Then you've got problems or you actually DO love it so much. Personally, I think the media around the world is making this such a big fuss, the media is kind of biased (well, not ALL of them but a majority). What I'm guessing is the people in that country is fearing that China would be a growing threat, and trying to sabotage her image, making her sound like one who cuts corners to appear good for a while regardless of long-term consequences. Foreign medias sometimes search for any possible chances to make China look bad. Do you people still remember the Tibetan issue? Remember how they took pictures and photoshopped them, making it look like that tanks were going to run over the people? How they distorted facts? I remember hearing that one of the medias actually took a picture totally unrelated to the issue (I think it was a picture taken from a scene where chinese people were in uniform ACTING to be fighting) and posting it along with text about the Tibetan issue. And wasn't it a coincidence that the Tibetan issue was SO heated when it was DURING or BEFORE the 2008 olympics? Seriously, after the olympics, the issue seemed to have miraculously solved and disappeared? Or they're just not reporting on it.

I acknowledge that this Melamine issue is a very serious one, but I think that the world should give China some time to solve it, (China better put their best effort) and get past it. Give them some time to improve and another chance. I really want to believe that China can overcome these issues and step up as a country with a reputation that all products they make are reliable.
